Tis the night before Christmas,
there lived a poor maid who was diligent and clean. Every day she swept the house and threw the sweepings into a large pile in front of the door. One morning, as she was about to go back to work, she found a letter on it. Since she couldn't read, she put the broom in the corner and took the letter to her master. It was an invitation from the gnomes, who asked her to deliver a child for them. The girl didn't know what to do, but after much persuasion, and because they told her that such an offer shouldn't be refused, she agreed. Then three gnomes came and led her into a hollow mountain where the little ones lived. Everything there was small, but so delicate and magnificent that it defies description. The woman in childbirth lay in a bed of black ebony with pearl buttons, the blankets were embroidered with gold, the cradle was made of ivory, and the bathtub of gold. The girl, now a godmother, wanted to go home, but the little gnomes earnestly begged her to stay with them for three days. So she stayed and spent the time in blissful joy, and the little ones did everything to please her.
