It was a cold December night in Mumbai, and the city was buzzing with last-minute shopping and holiday cheer. I was walking home from work when I noticed a small boy sitting alone on the pavement, staring at the Christmas lights decorating a nearby shop. He didnβt have shoes, and his clothes were thin for the chilly weather.
I stopped and asked him if he was okay. He looked up, his eyes wide, and said, βIβve never seen Christmas lights before. Theyβre so beautiful.β I sat down beside him and we talked about Santa, reindeer, and what he wished for this year. He said he just wanted a pair of shoes so he could play football with his friends.
I bought him a pair from a nearby shop and wrapped it with some ribbon I had in my bag. His smile lit up the whole street. Before I left, he handed me a tiny, folded piece of paperβa drawing of two people under a Christmas tree, with the words βThank youβ written in shaky handwriting.
That night, I realized Christmas isnβt about gifts or parties, but about spreading warmth and kindness, no matter how small the gesture. And every year since, I try to pay that kindness forward.
