Christmas for me was always silence with the smell of food.
I don’t remember expensive gifts or a full table. I remember my mom tired, trying to smile. My dad way too quiet. The TV louder than usual, maybe to cover what wasn’t being said.
There was one Christmas in particular. I was already an adult, kind of lost in life. Simple dinner. Rice, chicken, nothing special. But at some point I realized we were still there. Still whole. With everything that went wrong, and still together.
That day I understood that Christmas doesn’t save anyone. It just reveals. What stayed, who stayed. And sometimes, that’s already a lot.
