Tis the night before Christmas,
It was a cold Christmas night. Snow fell softly outside the church.
Eight-year-old Mira stood holding her mother’s hand. The church was full of light, but Mira’s pocket was empty.
Everyone was lighting candles. Mira whispered,
“Mom, will we light a candle too?”
Her mother smiled, though her eyes were wet.
“Not this year, my love.”
Mira quietly stepped outside. Her hands were cold. Near the corner of the church, she found a broken candle. It wouldn’t light, but she closed her eyes and made a wish.
Suddenly, a gentle voice said,
“No one is empty-handed on Christmas.”
An old man placed his glowing candle into Mira’s hands.
“When someone needs it more than you, pass it on.”
Mira’s eyes sparkled. Holding the warm light, she smiled.
