The technical improvements are obvious but it’s funny how every World Cup someone says the gap is closed and then it just sort of isn’t when the later rounds roll around.

I think it’s a stretch to say the gap has completely closed when African teams still struggle with the same old issue: turning strong performances into actual results when it really counts. Morocco is fun to watch but they haven’t beaten a top 5 side yet this tournament.

Egypt really had me pulling my hair out at the end there lol. The physicality and structure from teams like Morocco is just on another level now, feels like anyone can make a deep run this cycle.

there were 9 African teams in the round of 32 mostly thanks to the third place rule but their performance in the knockouts has been poor with only Morocco turning up

I watched a random Senegla youth game last year and the technical level even at that age was just miles ahead of what it used to be.

Egypt really should have won that match against Argentina, the live betting odds were swinging like crazy in the last ten minutes. Morocco's run this deep feels completely earned though, their wing play is so sharp it keeps ripping defenses apart.
