Anyone who keeps a cat has probably seen it at least once: a cat staring intently into nothingness.
This is due to their excellent hearing and sense of smell, and it's possible that they react to smells that humans don't notice.
I'd been living alone since university, and was worried about moving, so I decided to get a pet.
The apartment I was living in was 30 years old and quite old, and the interior was far from nice.
My landlord said that given the condition of the room, I could keep any pet I wanted, so I decided to get a cat.
The reason I chose a cat was because, when I moved into the apartment, I saw a man who seemed to have lived there before leaving the room with a cat in his arms.
I thought it was simply cute, and since I already had a cat, it seemed like the room would be a good fit for a cat, so I simply thought.
I immediately went to the animal shelter and brought home a cat.
It was a kitten about three months old, and from the day I brought it home, it had been staring intently up into the air.
When I looked in the direction the kitten was looking, there was nothing in particular.
But the kitten would often just stare intently at that spot.
After a few days of this, I realized I hadn't gone around to say hello to the neighbors, so I quickly bought a towel set and went around to say hello.
Fortunately, I didn't meet anyone strange, and one old lady even laughed and said, "Oh, it's a man this time," and gave me some sweets in return.
Relieved that I would be able to live here for a long time, I returned to my room, and sure enough, the kitten was staring intently up.
A week later. A delivery came to my house.
I had no idea who it was, so I looked at the recipient's name and saw a woman's name written on it.
I told the delivery person that it probably belonged to the previous resident, and they looked a little confused as they took the delivery and left.
When I returned to my room, the kitten was still staring intently up.
A few weeks later.
The police came to my house.
It seemed they were searching for a missing person.
They showed me a photo of a woman I had never seen before.
When I returned to the room, the kitten was staring up.
