Cryptopia Exchange Hacked

While it is a minor exchange with relatively low volume I'm always sad to see these types of news stories.  Cryptopia has been in unscheduled maintenance mode now for over 24 hours.  This apparently was driven by it being "hacked."  While it did not have a big negative effect on BTC price, it is always bad for the community, especially for lesser known alt coins that Cryptopia hosted.

Condolences to anyone who had coins there.

HI friends , may be all of you read a news about recent hack Recently, @Cryptopia_NZ  was the victim of a hack with more than $2 million leaks. Crypto exchanges MUST really care about #cybersecurity. According to some strong  sources, there is no sign that Cryptopia has a bug bounty program. Should #CER take a closer look into this case?

yes ?

or

No?

if still not read the news can get here : https://www.coindesk.com/new-zealand-crypto-exchange-cryptopia-goes-offline-citing-major-hack

In my opinoon, exchanges that hold people's funds should have insurance against these types of attacks to protect their users who store funds in it.

This is actually a very good idea!  It is also one of the main reasons why a Bitcoin ETF can't get approved, authorities think that it is impossible to provide appropriate "custodianship" of crypto assets.  Hacks like this reinforce that point of view.

Nice update @wry

I hope that anyone who holds funds there, can benefit from this news!

Update!  The New Zealand police are investigating and it looks like some of the ETH that was stolen was sent to Binance.

Binance notes they have frozen it and so that gives me some hope that the site may recover.

Of course, not sure anyone would keep coins there to trade if coins are not safe!

It really is discouraging to read about these types of things but on the other hand it is being dealt with so hopefully it won't happen again.

Sad to hear it. I was a user of cryptopia and it had shutdown and come back up due to financial problems and investors invested in it. I had like 10k sats there and its gone but eh its fine :) .

I really hope these criminals are caught! I think more crimes will be on a digital platform as we progress more into the future.

I have not got to personally use Cryptopia exchange for cryptocurrencies but this is certainly an unfortunate news both for the company and cryptocurrency. They will really need to tighten up on their site security much more from now on.

I have always had issues with cryptopia especially during the big boom and the exchange had to pause they trading because they couldn't handle the volume. I have had coins stuck withdrawal issues, so many problems.

Just an update on this story from the official New Zealand Police web page, they are continuing their investigation and hope to be wrapped up onsite by next Friday (the 15th).  They note all the challenges etc. of dealing with a crypto crime.

Maybe if they get done on site the site will be able to open up and at least let its users withdraw any coins that might have survived, but somehow I doubt it.

Oh well.

In an interesting update to this story, there is a news report that they have now been given the green light to reopen!  While they have not yet, let's hope they do so soon both to allow users to withdraw their coins and to start generating income to make good the larger than expected losses that have occurred.

While I want to be optimistic, their behavior to date does not inspire a lot of confidence.

Well what is a good thing is that unlike other governments New Zealand at least tries to find the culprit who did this and made them incur loses but there are governments who don't support crypto exchanges and doesn't care what happens to them.
