What movie or TV series has surprised you the most this year?

shogun on fx totally wrecked me in the best way, i went in expecting dry historical drama but the power plays and shifting alliances felt like watching a high stakes poker table where nobody shows their cards. toranaga's long game is insane, definitely put it on your list if you like samrt strategy and intense character dynamics.

The series ''From''. Its a horror type genre. And it is so confusing but in a good way. When you think you figured something out you actually did not. Just as you thought you got some answers to your questions, you are left with even more questions. Overall it is a great series. I recommend it.

I skipped over Patriot on Amazon for ages because the title made it sound like some generic action flick but it turned out to be this oddly calm dark comedy about a spy who just wants to play folk music. Give the first episode a shot with headphones on, the sound design is where they hide a lot of the jokes.

Mr Inbetween slipped totally past my radar until a friend insisted I give it a shot, the main dude somehow felt terrifying and kinda sad at the sametime which i didnt expect from a hitman series.

I finally watched Barry a few months ago and it completely floored me with how it balanced pitch black comedy and actual tension. Are you in the mood for something dark or more lighthearted right now?

I finally caved and watched Andor after skipping most of the Disney Star Wars stuff, and it blew me away with how grounded the rebellion politiccs actually felt. The prison arc alone was so tense it felt like I was betting on a long shot parlay that somehow kept hitting.

If you haven't tried it yet put The Fall on your list, the one with Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. It's a slow burn psychological thriller from a few years back but the pacing lets you really sit with the investigation in a way most crime shows rush past, just avoid googling anything about it beforehand.

A movie that caught me completely off guard this year was Riders of Justice with Mads Mikkelsen, it is labeled as an action revenge flick but the dark humor and weird statistical theories the side characters bring make it feel like a totally diffreent beast. I put it on expecting mindless shooting and ended up laughing at a bunch of tech nerds hacking their way through trauma recovery.

I threw on The Menu expecting a basic thriller and it turned into this dark satire that I still think about.

I finally got around to watching Andor and it blew me away honestly, wasn't expecting a Star Wars show to be so grounded and character driven. After that I needed something completely different so I wathed The Bear and that was another pleasant shock, perfect chaos with a heart.

Mentalist, after watching it's edits I was expecting a great show, it was mostly boring, it is just another Sherlock or House adaptation and the main character is not as interesting as those people. A 5/10 show for me.
