Blaqboygram Posted 19 hours ago #1 Posted 19 hours ago When you are first to act after the flop with a decent top pair, do you prefer to check to see what the opponent does, or do you lead out with a bet to protect your hand? I always struggle with playing out of position.
Novatia Posted 18 hours ago #2 Posted 18 hours ago Honestly depends on the board texture and the villain, but I lean towards checking a lot. Leading out just screams "I hit something" and lets them play perfectly.
nylora8 Posted 18 hours ago #3 Posted 18 hours ago Depends so much on who's behind you tbh. Against an aggro villain who'll stab at every check, I'm trapping; against a passive calling station, I'm just betting for value and protection, no need to overthink it.
Wrenan Posted 18 hours ago #4 Posted 18 hours ago Depends on the board texture tbh. Dry flops I'm checking to let them bluff, but on wet boards I'm leading out to avoid giving free cards.

autumnlor Posted 18 hours ago #6 Posted 18 hours ago Depends on the board tbh but I’m almost always checking to the raiser, keeps my range wide and lets them hang themselves. If it's super wet and I'm OOP multiway though, I’m not messing around with a free card.
verdon55 Posted 18 hours ago #7 Posted 18 hours ago If you read the basic rules of poker, you'll see that you shouldn't play without aggressively raising the bet; I mean, if you have a good hand, you shouldn't fold or check without betting.
mikac4hvt Posted 13 hours ago #8 Posted 13 hours ago yeah bro, always depends on board texture and your read on the villain ? i usually check with strong hands to trap but if the board is wet, definitely leading out ? lol
kazolyth7 Posted 5 hours ago #9 Posted 5 hours ago Not sure I'd call a check weakness, but leading out can backfire if they just float and now you're stuck OOP on the turn with a mediocre hand, no clue where you stand. I'd rather check and get info from their bet size before deciding.
emilio410 Posted 3 hours ago #10 Posted 3 hours ago yeah exactly, checking feels weak but half teh time it's a sneaky trap, gotta mix it up so they never know what ur doing ?
nyxenoria23 Posted 2 hours ago #11 Posted 2 hours ago I pefer leading out. Checking just gives them a free card.
lorixerra Posted 1 hour ago #13 Posted 1 hour ago If you lead out every time you have a decent top pair, observant players will just fold everything worse and you end up winning tiny pots with your strong hands. I find checking makes them more likely to bluff or value own themselves with second pair on later streets. The downside is sometimes you give a free card to a draw and it gets there, but that's just the price of getting paid more often I guess.
