Checking the flop out of position: Weakness or trap?

The whole "weakness or trap" framing in the title nails the dilemma perfectly, because against obbservant opponents a check gets read one way and a lead gets read the other way, neither of which is always right.

I led out with top pair decent kiccker last week and immediately regretted it when he smooth called and the turn brought a third diamond. I just sat there staring at the board wishing I had checked.

I used to lead out by default but it just inflates the pot when I have no clue where I stand, so now I prefer a check with top pair and see how the action develops on the turn.
