Checking the flop out of position: Weakness or trap?

When you are first to act after the flop with a decent top pair, do you prefer to check to see what the opponent does, or do you lead out with a bet to protect your hand? I always struggle with playing out of position.

depends on the board texture tbh, on a dry flop I'm checking a lot to let them bluff but on a wet board I'm leading out to charge draws

Do you adjust more if its a heads up pot versus multiway or does the indecision stay pretty similar no matter what?

I get way more nervous checking top pair on a draw heavy board than a dry one.

not leading out with top pair just feels so wrong sometimes, like you are just inviting them to hit their backdoor straight on the turn
