I think the framing of "in the long run" is what trips people up because talent falls off a cliff without the work ethic to keep it sharp. Seen too many naturally gifted players fizzle out after a couple seasons while the grinders just keep slowly climbing.

I once watched a kid with average skills but insane discipline outlast three "prodigies" in our local tennis circuit over a two year stretch, simply because he never missed a 6am practice while the others coasted on raw ability.

That's a tough call! While natural talent can give you a head start, relentless hard work usually wins out in the long run. It’s all about finding that balance!
