wry Posted November 22, 2019 #1 Posted November 22, 2019 In what is the most depressing news article I've read in awhile, this news story talked about how Bitcoin and crypto in general hasn't help protestors in Hong Kong, Iran, or Lebanon nearly as much as advocates would have hoped. One of the big advantages of Bitcoin is that it is a censorship resistant payment network. But when national governments shut down the entire internet or when there is no liquidity for the market, or scammers insist on exploiting the community, Bitcoin does not help nearly as much as many, including myself, would have hoped. A depressing but good read: https://www.coindesk.com/global-protests-reveal-bitcoins-limitations
m42z3c Posted November 22, 2019 #2 Posted November 22, 2019 thanks wryy ill give this a read. hope things get better over there, and many other places
ThomasTV2 Posted November 27, 2019 #3 Posted November 27, 2019 There is still room of the technology to develop. I am sure when Bitcoin was created no one thought, "well lets just turn off the internet to a country to stop it". Things like this in the news make everyone sad, but I am sure change will come and this issue in Hong Kong will be resolved soon. Its so sad to see these protest going on just for a basic human right that is: freedom.

bmg Posted December 17, 2019 #5 Posted December 17, 2019 That is very depressing and its frustrating to hear that it's not doing all the good we all would like to see . All we can do is have hope that things will change for the greater good in the future.
williamshennie9 Posted December 23, 2019 #6 Posted December 23, 2019 Yeah, bitcoin's inherent risk is that it relies on the internet. Without any internet connection, you can't transact with it, rendering it useless effectively. I guess everyone has some limitations.
