The Australian Department of Taxation (ADT) warned crypto investors about the appearance of scammers, which, under the guise of employees of the fiscal service, demand payment of fake taxes for operations with bitcoins and other crypto-currencies. This is reported on the official website of the department. (https://www.ato.gov.au/general/online-services/identity-security/scam-alerts/)

Assistant Commissioner ADT Kat Anderson said that the management learned about a new method of fraud in late 2017. By that time, crypto investors had given the scamers at least $ 50,000 in bitcoins. The victims were telephoned, sent SMS or e-mails and offered to transfer funds via Bitcoin-ATM to the specified address.
ADT believe that in the near future the attackers are activated even more. The complexity of the situation is that this does not exempt citizens from paying real taxes for crypto-currency transactions under the new legislation on the laundering of illegal funds.

"To distinguish real employees of the fiscal service from intruders, citizens are encouraged to call to clarify the identity of the inspector at 1800 008 540 and never to pass on information about their taxpayer identification number to third parties," the official website of the fiscal service said.
