The Light in the Window
On a quiet Christmas Eve, snow fell softly on the small town of Willowbrook. The streets were empty, and the houses glowed with warm lights. In one old house at the end of Pine Street, a single candle burned in the window.
Inside lived Mrs. Eleanor Finch, an elderly woman who spent Christmas alone. Her family lived far away, and winter made travel difficult. Still, every year she lit the candle, believing that no one should feel forgotten on Christmas.
That same evening, a young boy named Thomas was walking home after delivering newspapers. His bicycle slipped on the icy road, and he fell, scraping his knee. Cold and frightened, he looked around for help. Then he saw the candle shining in Mrs. Finch’s window.
He knocked on her door, and she welcomed him inside without hesitation. She cleaned his wound, gave him hot cocoa, and listened as he talked about his worries and dreams. The house filled with laughter, something it hadn’t known for a long time.
Later, Thomas’s parents arrived, grateful and relieved. Before leaving, Thomas turned back and hugged Mrs. Finch tightly.
“Thank you for the light,” he said.
That night, as church bells rang and the snow continued to fall, Mrs. Finch realized something important: the candle was never just a tradition. It was an invitation. And on that Christmas Eve, it brought exactly what she needed — connection, kindness, and hope.
And so, the light in the window shone brighter than ever.
