Well it seems like ladder bonus comes when You level up your vip status at very short period of time like a day or two. It was just like that in my case, for example when I ranked up to gold vip status literally at the same day I made like 20% progress and some serious wager as well. So I'm not 100% sure but I think that was the reason I've got ladder bonus. Almost I forgot to mention that I received this bonus 3 times, more or less it came like every 20% progress to my vip status. You said that you've lost 1k$ at once, I assume, but this doesn't always means you wager a lot to, u just probably got rinsed with the speed of light.

Every time I hit my goal which is 50k profits with a minimum of 2 million wagered I self exclude myself for 2 weeks .
