The Candy That Talked
Lila’s trick-or-treat bag felt light when she reached Mrs. Hale’s porch—everyone said the old lady only gave raisins. But the door creaked open, and Mrs. Hale pressed a shiny red candy into her palm. “Only eat this when the moon’s full,” she whispered.
Later, Lila sat on her windowsill, the moon glowing like a pumpkin. She unwrapped the candy. It hummed. “The black cat by the park needs a warm spot,” it said.
Lila grabbed her mom’s old scarf and ran. The cat—skinny, eyes like amber—huddled by a bush. She wrapped it up, and when she looked back, the candy was gone. But the cat purred, and from Mrs. Hale’s porch, a faint light winked.
That night, Lila found a tiny pumpkin on her pillow. Inside? A note: “Good keepers get second treats.”
