In a small town covered in fluffy snow lived an old shoemaker named Thomas. He was known for his craftsmanship, but even more so for his poverty. Thomas lived alone, his only consolation being his small workshop where he repaired shoes for his few customers. Christmas was approaching, and this year it promised to be especially cold and lonely.
On Christmas Eve, when the first star lit up in the sky, Thomas sat by the dying fireplace and darned an old boot. His heart ached with longing. Suddenly, he heard a soft knock at the door. On the doorstep stood a little girl in a thin coat, her feet clad in shoes that were completely worn out.
“Mr. Shoemaker, could you please repair my shoes? I need to go to Christmas service,” she asked timidly, holding out her shoes to him.
Thomas looked at her frozen red hands and old shoes, which were beyond repair. His heart melted with compassion. Without saying a word, he took out of his trunk a pair of brand new, warm woolen boots that he had prepared for himself.
“Take them, my child, they are a Christmas present for you,” he said, helping the girl put them on.
The girl's eyes filled with tears of gratitude. She hugged Thomas tightly and ran away, leaving her old shoes by the door.
Thomas returned to the fireplace, feeling a strange warmth in his chest despite the cold. He picked up the old shoes to throw them away, but then noticed that a gold coin had fallen out of one of them. He was surprised, because the shoes were completely worn out. Looking in the other one, he found another coin.
When Thomas looked out the window to see the girl, he froze. In the square, above the nativity scene, shone the very first star that had once led the Magi to Bethlehem. And he thought he saw the familiar silhouette of the girl, now walking easily and happily, illuminated by the light of that star.
That night, Thomas realized that the true miracle of Christmas lies not in receiving, but in giving and compassion. His life changed forever, and he never felt lonely again.
