Twas the night before Christmas, the snow falling slow,
Not a sound in the house, just the fire’s soft glow.
The tree stood bright with its lights all aglow,
And wishes hung high on the branches below.
The children were dreaming of laughter and cheer,
Of sleds and of songs and the warmth of the year.
When out by the window there came such a sound,
A jingle, a shuffle, a step on the ground.
I hurried to look, my heart full of cheer,
And there by the door stood a stranger so dear.
No red coat or sleigh, no reindeer in sight,
Just a sack full of smiles and eyes shining bright.
He left not a toy, nor candy, nor gold,
But moments of joy and stories retold.
Then off through the snow he faded from view,
Leaving Christmas behind soft, simple, and true.
