'Tis the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. Suddenly, a clatter outside prompted the father to investigate. He saw a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer led by St. Nick. St. Nicholas, described as a jolly old elf, arrived down the chimney with a bundle of toys. With a wink and a nod, he filled the stockings. He then returned to his sleigh, and as he departed, he called out, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
