Released in 2012, Ripple is a real-time net settlement system, currency exchange and money transfer network. Also called the Ripple Transaction Protocol or the Ripple protocol, it is intended to enable global financial transactions that are secure, instant and virtually free of any size at no additional cost.

In essence, it takes the idea of banking, and especially SWIFT transactions, and provides much needed upgrades by utilizing blockchain technology.

Ripple has enrolled several new financial institutions into its blockchain network in recent months, bringing its clients to more than 100, including MoneyGram money transfer giant, as well as big names like Santander Spain (NYSE: SAN), Unicredit Italia (MI: CRDI), Group UBS Switzerland (NYSE: UBS) and Standard Chartered based in the UK (OTC: SCBFF). Additional financial institutions are reportedly joining Ripple's growing global network this year, as it allows banks to settle cross-border payments faster and cheaper than currently using conventional global payments networks.

In terms of transaction time and fees, the Ripple network can hold up to 1,500 transactions per second, while the average transaction cost for Ripple is now a fraction of a penny. Investors Ripple hopes that in the future its blockchain technology will become a new standard for financial institutions that want to transfer funds around the world. It makes Ripple worth considering right now.
