It was done with some simple JavaScript, that they added into the website. This has been discussed in the past with the development team as an alternative to having the faucet.

Could be done on a specific page of the webiste. Those who don't want to use their CPU for faucets (or don't need it) will ne be forced to mine and those who have no more faucets to play with and want new one car go to the page. Still for what I see and try on other websites who have this system in place : to be able to mine an equivalent amount of satoshis than my actual faucet, it will take 10 hours or more.
