The ethics of Gambling

Heya guys :)

I was recently thinking to myself, what are the ethics of gambling? Many groups of people frown upon gambling, as it is a surefire way to lose money in the long run, while others seem to be okay with it, as long as you don't gamble with money you can't afford to lose. I know for me, gambling is not seen as a "sin", but it is not really spoken about or encouraged, since my culture views it as an unsustainable way to generate money.

What do you guys think of this? Is gambling frowned upon in your culture or in your family? Does you religion prohibit gambling? I would love to discuss this in the comments below :) Keen to hear your thoughts...

Be 18+ ? :) Thats a good ethic!  In Hungary i know lots of casino's. So Hungary might prohibit gambling. But in e-sport my country not that famous only "kids" go on tournaments and smth. If e-sport would've be more famous Hungary could be on biggest tournaments like esl one etc.

In my culture, gambling itself is not considered a shameful thing.

But this also depends on the type of gambling you are participating in.  Pretty common to hear of sports betting, track bets, lottery, etc.

However, it's very frowned upon by society if you gamble funds needed for your family. I imagine that would be true for any culture.

On the other hand, I was raised in a very religious family. During that time, it would have been unthinkable for me to participate in any form of gambling.  Even buying a small lottery ticket, or participating in a raffle-type fundraiser.  That sort of thing would have been grounds for ex-communication.

That said, I am no longer part of that belief system, and so I don't worry much about how my gambling is viewed, as it is a normal part of life where I live. :)

The view that gambling is sinful is usually attached to a couple of things.  First, it is by definition a non productive activity.  So to the extent you are supposed to be productive, it's not a good choice.  Second, for those religions that believe that all material benefits are sent by some deity by gambling with them you are not being a good custodian of the gifts that deity has sent you.  So bad you.

Of course, these wouldn't apply to owning a casino, other than maybe tempting others into potentially destructive activity.

I am not proud of my gambling but do it in small amounts for fun.  Having now seen so many people who I think may have a gambling problem, I am less a fan of it than I used to be.  So play on Stake and have fun, but if you are playing with money you need for something, please go do something else.

Lottery is completely normal is my culture, the same as betting on horses, but as soon as you talk about casinos, people start to think you have a gambling problem. The double standards of society lol. The funny part is, I've lost less money in casinos, than some of my friends have on lotto :D

Gambling is suppose to be a form of entertainment. When done to the extreme such as behaviors that leads to harm others and ownself then it is definitely on a bad path. If such a situation occurs, it is best to seek for professional help.

gambling is considered a taboo but it will always be happening. i dont see it as a bad thing until it gets to the point of gambling instead of paying the bills or feeding the kids type of thing. i alwyas see it as if i got  a little extra money, why the hell not. might be my turn to hit that jackpot!

In Germany people seem to be aware of all the gambling risks and that you lose a lot of money but they're ok with it. There are lots of Slot Machines in every 2nd bar or so and lots of casinos! I personally have nothing against gambling if you can still control it and you don't lose money off of official bank loans or such!

As with anything, it should be done in moderation and not abused. Its definitely not the best hobby one can have, because of how expensive it is and addicting, but i wouldnt say its morally bad. Its just a game after all.

I agree, I gamble for fun, with money I can easily afford to lose. You get people tough that spend their entire paychecks on casinos, and that is very dangerous in my opinion. Then you should not be gambling, as it is an addiction, not a hobby anymore :)
