williamshennie9 Posted January 13, 2019 #1 Posted January 13, 2019 Heya everyone So This month, I got super excited, because this is the first time I have put my funds into a wallet where I control the private key. This means I will gain access to the forks happening related to those coins. In january 2019, I was super excited because of 3 ETH hard forks which were coming up. Today, I went to find out how to claim them, and I noticed that both of these hard forks were scams trying to steal private keys. The only legit fork this month for ETH is the Constantinople Fork. The Ethereum Nowa Fork and the Classic Vision Hard Fork are both scams! Please be careful everyone - especially if it is your first time like mine The moral of the story is to always treat your private keys, well, private. Never share them with anyone until they have proven to be legit I am personally so relieved that I did not enter my private key anywhere, such a relief. Pirnitho Posted January 13, 2019 #2 Posted January 13, 2019 Thank you @williamshennie9 for making this thread and warning us of this possible danger! I just browsed a few crypto news sites which are abuzz with this news over the past few days. Good advice there about private keys. I hope some people were protected from these scams by reading your post.. 👍
Kate Posted January 13, 2019 #3 Posted January 13, 2019 I almost had a feeling in my gut about this since I was like 3 eth forks ? I was like wow and then I see this and I was like ah relived. Thanks for the warning hope no one lost funds.
lupandina Posted January 13, 2019 #4 Posted January 13, 2019 I researched this topic a bit last time, and made conclusion: if you don't want to waste a lot of time and efforts for researching, which forks are legit, and which scams, trying to claim your forked coins after, and selling it, etc, - just keep some part of your funds in some bigger exchange, like binance. So you will automatically receive these forked coins, which was legit and supported by binance, without any headache
Laura2000 Posted January 13, 2019 #5 Posted January 13, 2019 Wow, amazing how this people works, thank you williamshennie for this thread and warning us. Good advice . I hope some people were warmed from these scams.
KiXxnTRiXx Posted January 13, 2019 #6 Posted January 13, 2019 Really, wow.. how did you find out they were scam? Do youjust suspect it, or has this been echoed by others aswell? My Eth unfortunately was already scammed by an ponzi investment site that ran with everyones money falling off the face of the internet.. I was using them for a while and all of a sudden they were"upgrading" the website so we may be able to exchange coins within the site.. no withdrawls were being done evn though it said withdrew and gave a transaction number.. but magically the deposits were going in no problem.. When i finally put two and two together, it was too late... the website was gone.. the app no longer works.. no more responses from emails.. poor gone with all the invested coins,..

I honestly thought they were both legit, but when I went into the website, it was not encrypted, and asked my my private key on the main page. So I got suspicious, and did more research.

You can also ask people on bitcoin forums, like bitcointalk, or on this forum, or the forum on primedice for advice
ScooterPi Posted January 14, 2019 #10 Posted January 14, 2019 Thank you for posting this warning shennie! Also, Lupandina - that is great advice regarding using a large site, such as Binance
williamshennie9 Posted January 15, 2019 Author #11 Posted January 15, 2019 For anyone interested, the wallet which I am using in Coinomi. You get access to your private key, and they create new wallets for major forked coins. If they don't create a new wallet, you can always claim the new coins with your private key
Etude Posted January 22, 2019 #12 Posted January 22, 2019 Ah this is actually a great reminder that due research should be dully made before investing money in things for sure such as these cryptocurrency hardforks! Thanks William for the heads up!
davinmark Posted January 22, 2019 #13 Posted January 22, 2019 I have no idea what is going on with ETH Fork. i thought it will be a good HF for eth, but till i saw this news. i realize that Hardfork in BCH and BCH are failed
bmg Posted January 22, 2019 #14 Posted January 22, 2019 Its so disappointing to here about scams in the crypto currency world. Hopefully it won't happen again. Sorry that you had to deal with that william.
FotisNt Posted January 23, 2019 #15 Posted January 23, 2019 Thank god i did avoid those two! Will be investing on the Constantinople Fork anyways. By the way, thanks for sharing this thread and your own researches!! Gotta say that you literally saved me.

But it just goes to show how many scams there are and how easy it is to fall for them.
BLXN Posted January 29, 2019 #17 Posted January 29, 2019 I remember when I first heard about the forks, I recalled that there was another scam during the first fork as a result ETC was created, if I am not mistaken.

But i thought that the sites or exchanges which held our coins while going through a fork and if they achieve or get some coins the exchange keeps them since the private keys are with them and not with funds owner.

Kate Posted February 3, 2019 #21 Posted February 3, 2019 A thoughtful way to not get scammed by these types of schemes is by checking if they need our private key or not if they do need its a scam if they dont its not a scam.
