Yeah play money is decent but tbh you'll learn faster once actual chips are on the line even if it's micro stakes. Just set a tiny budget and treat it like tuition.

I got my feet wet playing deuces wild video poker first tbh, it let me learn hand rankings without the table pressure. Once I stopped misreading flushes as straights I moved to micro stakes sit n gos and lost like 6 dollars over two weeks before it clicked.

Freerolls are way better than just watching videos because you finally feel the pace of a real hand without sweating your deposit, but mixing that with a penny home game is where the fun actually sticks. I would grind a few free tourneys to nail down the mechanics and then find some friends for a micro cash night, the chat alone teaches you more than any YouTube clip.

I started by grinding play money tournaments on a few sites for two weeks straight, and the first time someone slow rolled me there actually sutng which made the move to 0.50 cash games way less emotional.

i basically setup a fake money home game with two friends and we called out our thought process each street, that helped me see how often i was lying to myself about having a strong hand, stuff videos never clicked on. actual stakes came later with 0.01/0.02 tables and suddenly folding bottom pair felt like a superpower

have you tried those free poker apps that let you play against real people without any cash at stake, or do you think that still misses the stress of actual losses?

are you mostly thinking about tournaments or cash games, cos the way you approach learning those two is pretty different and it might change what you should focus on first
