Nessa Posted Tuesday at 06:08 PM #1 Posted Tuesday at 06:08 PM I've heard different opinions about this. Do you think poker is mostly skill, mostly luck, or a mix of both? I'd like to hear what experienced players think.
Wrenan Posted Thursday at 05:46 PM #2 Posted Thursday at 05:46 PM fr it's a mix but skill takes over long term, luck just decides who wins the short sessions.
Onyxast0 Posted Thursday at 06:47 PM #3 Posted Thursday at 06:47 PM Honestly it's mostly skill if you're grinding consistently, luck just messes with you in the short run lol.
mikkys Posted Thursday at 08:39 PM #4 Posted Thursday at 08:39 PM Over a big enough sample size the math doesn’t lie, so skill wins out. Short-term variance can make you feel like a genius or a donkey though.
Clotyx Posted Thursday at 08:59 PM #5 Posted Thursday at 08:59 PM If you play one hand it’s all luck, but over a month of grinding you’ll see the same faces at the top tables for a reason.
umbraxen Posted Thursday at 09:05 PM #6 Posted Thursday at 09:05 PM long run it’s definitely a skill game, but those nights where you lose with aces three times in a row make you question everything
voxelle3 Posted Thursday at 09:23 PM #7 Posted Thursday at 09:23 PM ngl the short-term variance can be brutal, but that's exactly why the fish keep coming back—they think they're just unlucky instead of bad

Wow I didn't know that before
raxaytia2 Posted yesterday at 10:07 AM #10 Posted yesterday at 10:07 AM I'd say 90% skill 10% luck if we're talking about the long game. The luck part is what makes it not feel like chess though, keeps it fun and unpredictble in the moment.
vycarvi759 Posted yesterday at 10:22 AM #11 Posted yesterday at 10:22 AM i feel like the "long run skill" crowd downplays luck a bit too much, cause even pros get wrecked for months sometimes and it's not always tilt or bad play, just the deck being cruel. the real skill is surviving those stretches without going broke, which is way harder than it sounds
woonaeique658 Posted 23 hours ago #12 Posted 23 hours ago focus on playin fewer hands in bad position that alnoe cuts most leaks
Ashumtos Posted 22 hours ago #13 Posted 22 hours ago Honestly after grinding cash tables for a few years I think it's like 70% skill when you zoom out over 50k hands but man those Sunday sessions where you lose 4 buyins with top pair against runner runner straights sure feel like pure luck lol. The real separator is knowing when to fold a big hand to a nit who only raises with the nuts.
vexql35ehq Posted 22 hours ago #14 Posted 22 hours ago lol skill gap shows realy fast when u play enough hands, but that one donkey calling with 7-2 and hitting makes u wanna quit sometimes ?
jax1oh3r Posted 10 hours ago #15 Posted 10 hours ago ngl it?s both, but teh edge is all skill over time bro, luck just trolls you session to session ?
zylrizyl Posted 5 hours ago #16 Posted 5 hours ago Last month I folded pocket kings preflop and the guy who shoved had aces, that one read saved my whole session honestly.
phantki Posted 5 hours ago #17 Posted 5 hours ago Skill wins over months but luck decides your tuesday night mood for sure
kazon661 Posted 4 hours ago #19 Posted 4 hours ago track yuor folds for a week, youl see the skill in what you dont play
onyxvi333 Posted 4 hours ago #20 Posted 4 hours ago One underrated skill that took me ages to realize is knowing when to juts leave the table, huge part of winrate honestly.
ryogvmg8k9y Posted 3 hours ago #21 Posted 3 hours ago ? ngl it's def both, but skill is teh goat long term and luck just trolls you session to session ?
tyxus Posted 3 hours ago #22 Posted 3 hours ago For me it clicks most when I think of luck as the cards you get but skill as how you bet them.
lilyna Posted 3 hours ago #23 Posted 3 hours ago Skill shows when you bluff a tight reg off top pair on a scary board, not when you hit a two outer.
