Mohamed Salah scores in the shootout as Egypt edge past Australia

Egypt have booked their place in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they will take on Argentina or Cabo Verde.

 

The Pharaohs took the lead through Emem Ashour in the first half, but an own goal from Mohamed Hany in the second half handed Australia a way back into the game.

 

However, both teams failed to break the deadlock after 1-1, and the match had to be decided in a penalty shootout. Egypt managed to score with all four kicks as Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed for Australia.
