there were 9 African teams in the round of 32 mostly thanks to the third place rule but their performance in the knockouts has been poor with only Morocco turning up

I think it’s a stretch to say the gap has completely closed when African teams still struggle with the same old issue: turning strong performances into actual results when it really counts. Morocco is fun to watch but they haven’t beaten a top 5 side yet this tournament.
