wry Posted May 15, 2019 #1 Posted May 15, 2019 I've become increasingly interested in ransomware, see: And so not surprisingly a number of firms are turning to specialists to protect them from ransomware hackers or de crypt their data that was hacked in the attack. However, a recent study (news link below) discovered that all many of the "recovery" firms are doing is PAYING the RANSOM and then charging that plus more to the client for their services. Amazing! From the article: Quote Coveware admits to actually negotiating with scammers. They’ve found it to be one of the simplest methods for getting data back. It's interesting to see how the firms at least profile the hackers and try to make sure they are not actually terrorists, but it seems disingenuous to be claiming to recover a firm's data (most big money ransomware is targeted to firms now) when all they are doing is paying off the hackers. I guess that is still technically a "recovery". The firms also note that it is of course the targeted firm's fault for downloading the ransomware package. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what you think! Stay safe out there, cuz even the "good" guys are not that good! 🐵 Link: https://www.coindesk.com/study-finds-most-ransomware-solutions-just-pay-out-crypto
bmg Posted May 16, 2019 #2 Posted May 16, 2019 So basically what I'm getting out of this is that the hackers are being paid off and in doing that the company is just charging more to the clients? Wow that is some no good stuff going on there.
williamshennie9 Posted May 16, 2019 #3 Posted May 16, 2019 Many firms in my country are investing in specialised backup software and servers, so that if a ransomware attack happens, they can simply wipe the servers, and restore it back to its former state. It is really becoming widespread these days, which makes me worried.
Shaniqua Posted May 16, 2019 #4 Posted May 16, 2019 wow... thats crazy to hear... i wonder thought if any situations have happened that the hackers did delete the stufff or infomration cause it wasnt paid out =(
Kate Posted May 16, 2019 #5 Posted May 16, 2019 Wow what a move and what a news ! I do understand the fact that they have to pay to get back their data because lets face it data is one of the most important things a company needs to run even more than money and data safe keepers gets paid a lot of money to do that .

barbaris Posted May 16, 2019 #7 Posted May 16, 2019 This method is very popular among hackers. Hackers are probably get information about the vulnerability or the valuable data from employees of these companies.
Shaniqua Posted May 16, 2019 #8 Posted May 16, 2019 hmmmm the whole thing about randsomware is popular yes, but how they do it barbaris, that is beyond my scope of competence
