wry Posted May 21, 2019 #1 Posted May 21, 2019 The title says it all and I am not making this up! Self proclaimed Satoshi, Craig Wright, has applied to the U.S. Copyright Office claiming rights over both the foundation Bitcoin White paper and the Bitcoin source code. Amazingly, he may actually get it. Under U.S. copyright law whomever files is often awarded copyright. If multiple people file, multiple people can get copyright on the same material. U.S. law just gets more bizarre every day. I don't expect you to believe me, so I quote from the article: Quote To be clear, registration does not imply ownership nor is this an official patent. The copyright process allows anyone to register anything in an effort to prepare, say, for lawsuits associated to ownership. Computer code and white papers can be copyrighted insofar as they are considered literary works and, as the copyright office writes: “In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.” In other words you, the reader, could register this post and I would have to fight you in court to contest it. Fortunately, as the article goes on to note, registering copyright does NOT mean the U.S. government says you own something, it just means you now have standing to sue to try and claim ownership. Still, it would be funny if it could not in turn be so serious, e.g. Craig registers Bitcoin Code, sues any Bitcoin developer, the Bitcoin developer doesn't bother to show up in court, and then the court rules for Craig. Could happen. For those of you who have not been keeping up with the Craig Wright follies, this is the same guy who was so obnoxious that exchanges started delisting his BitcoinSV coin that he claims is the "real" Bitcoin. See: This guy is a walking disaster for crypto. What will he do next? Link: https://www.coindesk.com/craig-wright-attempts-to-copyright-the-satoshi-white-paper-and-original-bitcoin-code
barbaris Posted May 21, 2019 #2 Posted May 21, 2019 I think this guy is just engaged in self-PR for some of his goals, so there is a lot of noise around his name. But this my opinion.
wry Posted May 22, 2019 Author #3 Posted May 22, 2019 Update!!! In a very unusual turn of events, the US Copyright Office made an announcement today that it in no way recognized Craig Wright as Satoshi. Wow, just wow! cryptofly Posted May 22, 2019 #4 Posted May 22, 2019 I`m pretty sure he has a plan and a reason to do that. You can see how BSV coin just jumped from 56 usd to 101 usd in less than 48 hours. There most be something behind all this show. Is the WP for Ethereum available for copyright....? I`m interested . Good luck.
bmg Posted May 24, 2019 #5 Posted May 24, 2019 well hell why do we all just go apply lol. I hate the U.S. government and there lame ways of doing things.
wry Posted May 31, 2019 Author #6 Posted May 31, 2019 Update! Apparently Craig is starting to try and "enforce" his fake copyright as some sites are starting to pull down Satoshi's white paper. Fortunately, the story that reported sites taking down the paper also included a pretty solid link to the paper itself. If you haven't gotten it, read it now, it's really cool!
