WIZ001 Posted July 11 #1 Posted July 11 South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, confirmed Saturday by South Africa's Ministry of Sport, the South African Football Players Union, and Mamelodi Sundowns FC. No cause of death has been confirmed. Adams featured in all three of South Africa's group stage games at the 2026 World Cup, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic and coming off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea that sealed South Africa's first-ever place in the knockout rounds, where they were eliminated by Canada. He was substituted at halftime against the Czechs, a day after the death of his grandmother. Adams came through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC before joining Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, helping the club win the CAF Champions League title in the 2025/26 season. He earned 13 caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring two goals in World Cup qualifying. Sport Minister Gayton McKenzie called it a devastating loss for South African football, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered his condolences on behalf of the global football community. The South African Football Players Union asked for restraint and compassion from media and the public while the circumstances of his death remain under investigation. Rest in peace, Jayden Adams.
