Why is it so hard to set a mental stop limit?

Every time I go on a losing streak, I keep going till I either am back in the green or empty out my balance completely. There is no in between. Next time I play I'm going to stop playing if I go below 50% of my balance and view my new balance as 100%. Well that is the plan anyway...It's all about a matter of perspective when it comes to managing your bankroll and the only thing stopping you is greed.

I say this every time to myself as well. I want to stop at certain level. At least I want to take a break, but no. I keep going. It's so hard to stop because of greed. We don't want to admit it, but that's true. If you play without money you would stop. But if everything is going so good and you are winning. You see that balance going up and up. And it looks like everything is going so smoothly that no matter what you do you always win... and when you realize that you start loosing, and loosing. Then you lie to yourself that this is just an accident and soon you will be able to rebuild your balance, but no... you begin to loose more and your balance is melting away.

This is what is happening to all of us. The gambling is not about how to start, how to play, what strategy, no... it's about WHEN to stop. I today said to myself that I will stop or at least change the game after some winnings. And I indeed changed the game, went from HiLo to Mines, and I won even more on Mines. And then I was super excited and instead of stopping I forgot about my pledge and didn't stop. I come back to Hilo and busted my balance 😂 How stupid is that!?

maybe it would be good if in my opinion you use the limit of profit that you will achieve and use the max lost if you make a large deposit because with that I think you will be safe, because if you don't use the initial benchmark about your limit your profit will be certain you will busted if playing too long

Because you are addicted to it easy xD . Or you have lost so many times that you want to have a very glorious win in the history so that you could neutralise the feeling of so many loses you had.

Yes, greed is the problem of all players and it plays with us and our balance, not for the better. To control her seems to me not possible. Each time we lose, we try to return everything and make a small profit with the next bet and it always ends in a loss if it does not stop on time.

in my experience if you experience consecutive defeats it's better to pause for a moment don't keep betting ... and see what conditions are good today for betting or not ... if we obey our willingness to gamble, then maybe you can slowly go bankrupt and call this site a cheater or something ... so play smartly set the strategy when playing and don't focus too much on big profits ... better a little profit so we don't take too much loss ..

It is hard to stop when you are winning, it is harder to stop when you are losing, is a cliche for a reason.

When you're winning it's greed.  When you are losing it's a little more complicated, but basically you are falling prey to a common decision making bias called escalation of commitment.  It is quite common but when we are down we experience the pain of loss so we want to fix it so we risk more and more until, busted.  Don't feel bad, it preys on all humans and explains how we get lots of wars and other debacles.

Hey there buddy!

I mean... I do really struggle with the same issue that you're having. And that issue is Not stopping whilst you are ahead. I really struggle to mentally put a stop limit on where I want to stop when gambling too. It is a real big struggle for me too when wanting to set a goal of like a hundred dollars profit. It is more or less impossible for me to do this. I think it is more to do with greed like @wry mentioned above me... I totally agree with that. And if you lose some also... You really want to win it back. Even if you're up a ton of money if you lose a little you want to win it back. Which is a bad habit. I really need to work on this because it is kinda getting beyond the joke with me xD. But yeah.

Have a great day guys and best of luck playing stakers ❤️

Setting it up for yourself is pretty damn hard, but if you happen to have someone else that can tell you: stop for atleast 2 hours right now and you listen to the guy because of his great decisions in stopping and making bank then you might just want to listen to the guys opinion and ask him when you have a very big profit, do I stop or withdraw or something? In my opinion its great to have a friend like this who I can ask and he would give me great advices and not the ones that just beg from me.

hello friends so nicely elaborated the greedy ness of players.what extent we can go before the burst we can't think about the losing.when i drained then we realized we are losing.its happen every time with us due no predefined stop  either win or loses that's the cause.if we stopped before red line crossed then we can recover our loses may be.every time run behind the reds to find a green dots.hope someday it will change then  our loss % decrease.

Most gamblers just get catched by greed. Even if you won huge gamblers just keep going and chase more or higher wins. a couple of days ago I saw a documentary on television that showed the dark side of Las Vegas.

I have been in Vegas recently and as a tourist, gambler you only see the bright side of Vegas. A huge strip with all lights, entertainment and much more. But after seeing the documentary on television I also saw the dark side of it. And after seeing it you see how greed can catch you and hit you in the face huge time.

There was an interview with a couple that had been living in Vegas for 7 years. They both had a decent job as teacher, had a house, 2 cars and went on holidays 2 times every year. They also loved gambling but within their limits. 3 times a week they went to the casino and played mostly slots games. Some years back they hit the lot and took down a jackpot for over 500,000$. They could have had a good life with their jobs and some extra 500,000$ in their saving account.

But then everything went downwards. They started gambling more with the thought of hitting that jackpot again but following is the hard reality what happened.

  • They gambled all their profits and to chase of recovering losses they also gambled their earlier saving money, sold their house and moved to an apartment.
  • They also lost all that money
  • Both lost their job
  • couldn't pay the rent anymore
  • And finally ended on the streets and already living outside in an underground tunnel for over 4 years.

But what hitted me most was them telling that they went on the street to try to make some money and then went straight to the casino instead of providing themselves with some food. They rather liked to search in dumpsters for food and drinks so they could just keep gambling

I used to have the same problem when I first started.  It was either all or nothing for me and most of the times I ended with nothing.  I have become much better at bankroll management and I always go in with a plan and goal now.  I would say there are still times I revert back to my old ways, but having a goal to begin with and sticking to it has made a world of difference for me personally.

I've seen educational stuff about this. It comes down to how when we get close to winning, or if it looks like we almost one, a burst of dopamine gets sent through the brain which will then cause you to continue to bet. Or when you recover a little, even more dopamine is sent, which again, is why you feel like going on even we when you know you should stop. Dopamine is crazy man

Wish I knew why i couldn't, i'd probably be rich :P

I set a 'mental stop' last night whilst gambling with BTC, went from 260k sats to 1.1m sats and decided i'd get 100k more and stop. Little did i know, that 100k would be the chase that brought my balance to 0.

It's hard because we get greedy, the winning makes us feel invincible, until it comes crashing down in a burning pile of reds :P

I know what you feel man and i experienced that right now, got a long red streak and i want to keep continue but i don't have any balance left. In my opinion, it's hard to stop because we always think how much coins we already spent to hunt that payout and we always think "it must be this one, 20 more roll for sure or 50 more roll".

its because .. if we are winning then we get greedy and try to win some more and then we start losing and when we try to recover our loss bu doubling our bet, we lose everything haha
