Snike Posted December 15, 2017 #1 Posted December 15, 2017 https://www.coindesk.com/man-stole-1-8-million-ether-armed-robbery-prosecutors-say/ So I've read the news again today and I saw this article about a man kidnapping his target and then stealing his keys from him. He then entered the victims apartement and stole his hardware Ether wallet, which contained 1,8$ million of the coin. Could you imagine being kidnapped and robbed your cryptocurrency? Do you think the robber knew about the victims wealth in cryptocurrencies?
testB Posted December 15, 2017 #2 Posted December 15, 2017 It is predictable that kidnappings would become more effective, and should quickly become more common. I actually spoke of this in other circles, it's one of the possible problems with people having full access to all their liquid assets. I guess safekeeping services would still have their business.

Online wallets arent safe because of the risk of being hacked. Hardware wallets can be stolen

Must have been an inside job, or else how would they know he had that sort of money on his wallet. I wonder if this sort of thing happens if the money is just gone forever, or if there's anyway of getting it back? This is the problem with anonymous currencies I guess. Ye crime + anonymous is never a good mix
barbaris Posted December 15, 2017 #5 Posted December 15, 2017 Criminals do not need cash anymore, they need crypto currency. They look to the future

These criminals are targeting people to get online currencies seems a bit weird only because they would have to know that that person has or is dealing with online currencies. So maybe an inside job? Or people they have done previous business with? 11 minutes ago, barbaris said: Criminals do not need cash anymore, they need crypto currency. Nobody will know that it was a criminal activity or something because youre completely anonymous

Unfortunately Once bitcoin gains higher use as an official currency it'll be anything but rare to see people do illegal stuff to get bitcoins and stuff. Who knows what kind of ideas they get...
barbaris Posted December 15, 2017 #9 Posted December 15, 2017 Bad that can not be secured from this ordinary people.
futurwavsurf Posted December 24, 2017 #10 Posted December 24, 2017 I've been saying since bitcoin has increased incredibly in value that there needs to be inconspicuous cold storage devices. For example, a lipstick tube that doubles as a secret cold storage? Anyone make these?? I want one! Lol
wilberthh Posted December 24, 2017 #11 Posted December 24, 2017 Must be a planned robbery. Feelsbad for the victim, I wonder how the robber knows it

Thats a high-tech kidnapper there! ,The man which is kidnapped maybe is boastful for his crypto maybe he took a screenshot of it then posted publicly to his social media account so the kidnapper know. Because if you're not boastful nor shared publicly youre account then theres no kidnapper who will kidnap you just for your crypto. But I feel bad for the robbed man.
Kargai Posted December 25, 2017 #13 Posted December 25, 2017 No need all of that, just look at how things happen in Stake. We know some players who shared the info that they have dozen or hundreds of BTC. If you search a little more you can probably find a Facebook, a Twitter, etc. and with time you can start to be friend with him and maybe find his street address. Than you can organize a kidnapping like that. It's not that difficult since some players don't take minimal protection.
