🎃 “The Scarecrow Who Remembered”
Every October, the farmers of Briar Hollow built their scarecrows and set them high above the cornfields. Most were crooked things—patched jackets, broken brooms, grins made of straw—but one scarecrow stood out.
Old Eli’s Scarecrow.
He built it every year, always the same way: a burlap face stitched with neat black thread, eyes made from smooth river stones, and a crooked hat that never seemed to age. He called it Jonah. Said it was lucky.
But one Halloween, Eli didn’t come to the harvest festival. The next morning, his field was empty—his boots still on the porch, his lantern still burning low. And in the middle of the cornrows, where Jonah once stood, there was nothing but a pile of straw and a pair of river stones staring up at the gray sky.
The neighbors rebuilt the scarecrow out of respect.
The next day, it turned to face the village.
By the end of the week, it had moved again—closer.
By Halloween night, Jonah stood at the edge of the road, hat tilted, straw hand outstretched as if waiting for something… or someone.
They say that if you walk through Briar Hollow on Halloween, you can still hear the rustle of straw behind you, keeping pace. And if you turn around, you might catch a glimpse of a figure in the fog—hat low, eyes shining like river stones—watching, remembering, waiting.
Because some scarecrows don’t forget the hands that made them.
And some harvests don’t stay buried. 🌾🕯️
