It was a few years back, I was hiking solo in the deep woods up in the Rockies. Beautiful place, truly, but isolated. That's what I liked about it, the silence, the feeling of being utterly alone. Or so I thought. I'd set up camp by a small, crystal-clear stream, the kind where you can see every pebble at the bottom. As dusk settled, I was tending my campfire, the crackle and pop the only sound. Then, I heard a twig snap, off to my left. I froze. You get used to animal sounds out there, but this wasn't quite right. It was… too deliberate. I peered into the shadows, straining my eyes. Nothing. Just the dark outlines of pines. "Hello?" I called out, trying to sound braver than I felt. A moment of silence, then a voice replied. Not a human voice, not exactly, but something that sounded like a perfect mimicry of my own, just a little deeper, a little… off. "Hello there. Didn't expect to see anyone out here. My blood ran cold. I knew that voice. It was my voice, but like it was speaking through a filter. A chill that had nothing to do with the mountain air crept up my spine. Then, from behind a thick fir tree, it emerged. At first, I thought it was a bear. A massive, dark shape. But it moved too smoothly, too silently. And as it stepped into the flickering light of my campfire, my breath hitched in my throat. It was me. Not a reflection, not a ghostly image. It was me, wearing the same hiking clothes, carrying the same backpack, even the scuff marks on its boots were identical. The only difference was its eyes. They weren't my warm brown eyes. They were black, utterly black, like two pools of obsidian reflecting the firelight. And they held an intelligence that was ancient and hungry."Fancy meeting you here," it said, again in my voice, but now with a subtle, predatory purr beneath it. It took a step closer, and I instinctively stumbled back. I couldn't speak. My mind was screaming, but my mouth was dry. This wasn't possible. It was a hallucination. A trick of the light. But the terror was too real. It mimicked my confused frown, then a slow, unsettling smile spread across its face – my face. "Lost, little me?" it whispered, and the sound sent shivers down my spine. "Perhaps I could help you find your way… into me." That was when I broke. I didn't think, I just ran. I scrambled up the nearest slope, crashing through bushes, not caring about the thorns tearing at my skin. I could hear it behind me, the sound of my own feet pounding on the earth, gaining. I didn't dare look back. I just ran until I collapsed, gasping for air, hidden under a dense thicket of pines. I stayed there, curled into a ball, shaking uncontrollably, until the first rays of dawn pierced through the canopy. When I finally dared to move, the woods were silent again. Too silent. I practically flew down the mountain, not stopping until I reached my car. I drove for hours, not looking in the rearview mirror, not even stopping for gas until I was far, far away from those woods. And ever since then, I've had this… unsettling feeling. Sometimes, when I catch my reflection in a window at night, or see a fleeting glimpse of myself in a crowd, for just a split second, those eyes aren't my eyes. They're black. Utterly, impossibly black. And I wonder, was it really me I saw that night, or was it just… a shape shifter stake : haru050399
