The process is more complicated, you transfer the data from your network to the server and then the server sends the data to the destination, the destination back to the server and the server back to you. And that's how the destination will think that you're from the server's location, not your actual location. It is indeed a nice way to earn something, but as it has no monetary value, I wouldn't bother with it. I'm sure that the prizes cost enough not to be able to earn it too easy.
