Roulette is, poker aside, probably the greatest game ever. I thought it was a sucker game until about 2 and a half years ago, the day i was introduced to Bitcoin. What a coincidence...

Without boring you to tears, if you want to play roulette better, and not feel like it is purely a game of luck, I am going to explain my roulette strategy. Pay attention, this is a good one.

If you do not know how roulette pays, take 3 minutes to understand 36:1, 18:1, 9:1. These are what you will get paid for hitting a straight up number, 1 chip on one number, a split bet, 1 chip placed on a line between 2 numbers, and a corner bet win, 1 chip placed in the corner, where 4 numbers intersect. All the pays always add up to 36 in roulette. There are 37 numbers, the 37th number, or the green 0, is the house number. It is the house number because in European Roulette, if you divide 100 by 37, you get 2.7, because the house only pays 36:1, they get to keep 2.7% of every bet, as they dont pay true odds of 37:1. That said, all you need to know is you are fighting a 2.7% house edge, which is great compared to the 5.26% you get in American Roulette. The 0 & 00 give the house 2 numbers, and by the same math, dividing 100 by 38, you know the house edge is 5.26%.

I have done a terrible job of explaining this, thats ok. If you never had any idea of how roulette pays and why or how the numbers work at all, this is enough information to be able to put it together in your head. You need to know these numbers and how they all work together. It is critical if you want to have a real chance at consistently winning and improving your game, to know how much you are betting, how much you will win no matter what number comes, if its a split bet or corner bet, how much you will win and how much you will lose depending on what number comes up. Mathematically its very simple, 36:1 18:1 9:1 2:1 1:1, house edge 2.7%, 2.7 x 37 = 100. Easy.

Hedge your bets. This is the beauty of roulette. This is how you take roulette from being a game of chance, and turn it into a mathematical mental schematic that you control and bet any way you want. Now is where, if you didn't know, you will learn about the inside and outside bets, and why they matter.

I hate betting black/red or odd/even bets for 2 reasons. 1) getting paid even money is no fun to me. Even/odd, red/black, high/low bets all pay 1:1, even money. 2) If you are looking to double your bet, there are far better games out there to do that. All roulette bets that pay 1:1 or 2:1 are found on the outside of the table. The table limits are higher on the outside. The inside bets, that potentially pay 36:1, have a much lower table limit. These are the 0 and 1-36 numbers, the inside. Straight, split, corner bets, are bet inside.

My bet exactly is 1 chip on the 0, because i like the 0, and 1 chip on the 23. I know that i have bet 2 chips. We can bet any numbers on the inside and get lucky, but that pesky 2.7% is always there and if you sit down with $10,000.00 after 5000 bets of 2 chips each, you would have roughly $9,730.00.

But if you take 1 more chip and bet it on a anything outside that pays 2:1, the 1-12, 13-25, 26-36 blocks, or the long street bets at the end of the table 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,34 and the other 2 rows next to that, you have successfully hedged your bet.

Here is how hedging works. You have 0 and 23 bet, 2 chips inside, and the long middle street bet with 1 chip on the outside. The house is going to pay you 36:1 for hitting the straight up number, 0 or 23. If these don't come up you lose 2 chips. Unless you bet a 2:1 chip outside that has the chance of coming 1 in every 3 spins. When you get 2 chips back 1 in every 3 times the ball is spun, you can lose the inside 2 chips bet 1 in every 3 spins, and not lose anything. In essence, you get 1 in 3 of your inside bets paid for. This is a huge advantage. If you were to place 30 inside bets that were hedged with the 1 (2:1) chip outside, you would get an extra  10 bets on the house from the 2:1 bet that comes 1 in 3 spins...

So, bet 1 satoshi on 0 and 1 satoshi on 23 and 1 satoshi on any outside 2:1 bet. This is Hedging. Hedging decreases the volatility of your bankroll.

Ive read books about poker, Ive even read books on how to increase your chances of winning a state lottery, but Ive never read any books about roulette. You don't need to. Having a basic understanding of the odds and game pays is enough to be able to calculate very quickly what you need to bet on the outside to cover your bet on the inside.

Awesome post badger! Very relevant to the whole forum and everyone who reads and helpful! I like the effort you put into elaborating on these games, you do the people that dont know much about them a big favor(like me).

I really liked your explanation of roulette!  You are right that the single zero here makes it much better game than you will find in many "live" casinos.

I agree you can hedge your inside bets but remember you are still giving up that 2.7% edge to do so.  I usually just pick my lucky numbers, including 0, because well, you have to bet the green to win the green, so I don't move my bets around too much and feel bad if a number I was betting hits.  I also like to look for streaks.

I hear you on the boredom of the 1:1 color bets.  One suggestion I made in the how to improve roulette thread was to add the "en prison" rule.  With that rule, if green comes up on a color bet, you don't lose your bet, you just make it again, this cuts the house edge to 1.35%, which is pretty decent.  However, so far no takers, either here or at the other leading gaming site we like.

Thanks again for this Badger, sharing your experience really helps everyone out!  You're the best!
